This movie, “Anne of Green Gables”, directed by Kevin Sullivan, is one of my favorites. I fell in love with Anne ever since my Mom read aloud the first book, by Lucy Maud Montgomery. So much so, that when we stopped reading at book three, I read the rest of the series myself. (If you’d like a review for any or all of those, please tell me!) 😀
In the 1980’s, Mr. Sullivan tackled the massive project of making a movie out of the first book. It took years — literally — since he couldn’t find an actress suited perfectly for the character of Anne, until Megan Follows auditioned. Since I like the movie so much, I ought to give a review for it.
The Story (Spoiler Warning)
The movie follows Anne Shirley through life from age 12 to 16. This imaginative, red-haired girl is adopted by the brother and sister, Matthew and Marrila Cuthbert, on Prince Edward Island. Anne soon gains a “bosom friend”, Diana Barry, as well as a hated enemy, Gilbert Blythe, when he called her “carrots”. Through thick and thin, Diana is always there for Anne, and Anne for Diana. Though Anne never even wants to look at Gilbert, he is very sorry, and tries to help her when he can. The whole town comes to love the little orphan girl, Anne Shirley.
(Spoiler warning over)
Typically, movies don’t follow the book perfectly, and while I’m not saying this one did, it was so very, very close to the book that I was amazed. And happy, too. He cut hardly anything out from the book, which, of course, resulted in a rather long movie. But I love it all the more for that. It lets you feel the characters better than if he’d tried to trim it down to a regular feature-length film. It was originally made for TV, so that’s why it’s so long. But now, you can buy it on DVD, remastered and everything, at:
You can also get a TON of fan products there too.
The music is also fantastic; they choose a good composer in Hagood Hardy. He was able to capture the feeling very well, and I can’t get enough of listening to this music. I found a modified version of the soundtrack on YouTube here:
I loved every moment of the movie from beginning to end.
Do I recommend “Anne of Green Gables”? Yes!
